The Maguindanao Sultanate in the 17th Century
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Sultan Kudarat’s Maguindanao as the Dutch and Spanish records show it: a sultanate that held its own between two empires by diplomacy as much as by war.
Ruurdje Laarhoven's study looks closely at relations between the Dutch at Ternate and the Maguindanao sultanate in the 17th century. Library records list Dutch activity in Mindanao among its subjects. The book has 267 pages of text plus appendices, notes, a glossary and a bibliography.
A Mindanao annotated bibliography sees its main theme as the politics of a small power against big ones. It shows how the sultanate used practical, shrewd diplomacy to fend off Dutch and other colonial threats to its sovereignty and territory. The same source calls the book a contribution to the scarce writing on Mindanao's local history.
The book was reviewed in the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, and by Leonard Andaya in Asian Perspectives in 1992.
