The standard history of the Muslim peoples of the Philippines: the coming of Islam, the sultanates of Sulu and Maguindanao, and three centuries of Spanish wars against them, told from the Moro side of the record. Reissued by the University of the Philippines Press in 1999.
Cesar Adib Majul's history follows the Muslim peoples of the Philippines from the coming of Islam in the 15th century. It traces the growth of Muslim political institutions and the sultanates of mainland Mindanao and Sulu. A large part of the book covers the long wars with Spain, from 1565 to the end of Spanish rule, told as a defence of faith and homeland.
Majul taught at the University of the Philippines from 1948. He wrote the original preface in 1970, and the book came out in 1973 for the university's Asian Center, with maps, a glossary and a bibliography. Reviewers noted his use of sources from outside the Philippines and his treatment of the Sabah claim.
