Lam-ang, Labaw Donggon and Bantugan
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Three epic heroes put on stage, among them Bantugan, the hero of the Maranao Darangen.
Mig Alvarez Enriquez turns 3 Philippine epics into plays, each in 3 acts. "Lam-ang, Son of Namongan" adapts a version of the Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang. "Labaw Donggon, or the Hero Who Learned a Lesson" adapts a fragment of the Visayan epic Hinilawod. "Bantugan, or How Bantugan Married Fifty Women" adapts a fragment of the Darangen, the Maranao epic, whose hero Bantugan comes from Bumbaran. That play is dedicated to Al Glang, a Maguindanao scholar.
The Labaw Donggon play opens with an introduction to the epic that draws on Jocano. In a note, the playwright explains the form he calls total theater: instead of a curtain rising and falling on each scene, one scene ends as the next begins. He adds that the plays can also be staged as straight dramas.
Enriquez first learned theater arts from the Jesuits of the Ateneo de Zamboanga. He signed the preface in November 1982, and New Day Publishers of Quezon City brought the book out in 1983. His Two Liberation Plays of 1991 lists them as a trilogy.
