The torogan, the carved house of the Maranao datu, its building, its okir and the rank it proclaimed.
This illustrated book is about the torogan, the traditional house of the Maranao datus, and its place in Maranao life. Library records list its subjects as Maranao social life and customs, Maranao rites and ceremonies, and the conservation and restoration of traditional houses in Lanao del Sur. Rex Book Store in Manila published the first edition in 1996, in 183 pages with some colour plates and a bibliography.
Readers who have reviewed it online say Madale explains why the torogan was central to Maranao life, and that he also discusses the clash between the old order and the electoral system, and how fast change has affected the Maranao.
The author, Abdullah T. Madale, was born in 1937. He had written on his people for decades: he co-edited The Maranao with Mamitua Saber in 1975, wrote The Remarkable Maranaws in 1976, and followed this book with The Maranaws: Dwellers of the Lake in 1997.
