Expressions in the Culture, Arts and Society of the Muslims in the Philippines
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Moro art, architecture and ornament read for the ideas of space and self behind them, by a Tausug art historian.
Abraham P. Sakili's study looks at how the Muslims of the Philippines think about and use space, and uses that idea to read their visual arts, architecture and culture as a whole. It works mainly from the Muslims' own point of view, especially those of southern Mindanao, and has many colour pictures of works of art. The UP Asian Center published it in 2003, in 275 pages with a bibliography and index.
Sakili has also written on what he calls the "Mindanao problem", which he sees as rooted in history and culture, and on the torogan, the Maranao royal house.
