The pangalay dance of Sulu and the dances, music and dress around it, documented in the field by the woman who brought it to the national stage.
This book documents pangalay, the traditional dance of the Tausug, Sama, Badjao and Jama Mapun of the Sulu archipelago, together with related folk arts. It includes written instructions for performing the dances. It won the Manila Critics Circle award for best art book in 1983.
Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa first saw pangalay at a wedding in Jolo in 1969. She lived in the Sulu archipelago for about 30 years, taught at a Mindanao State University campus in Bongao and spent decades researching, practising and teaching the dance. She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2015.
