Adat and Sharee’ah Laws in the Life of the Tausug
Printed by the author or a very small press, sold direct or on demand: the link goes to where they offer it.
How Tausug custom and Islamic law live together in one society, by a Tausug scholar of the University of the Philippines.
Mashur Bin-Ghalib Jundam's book looks at how adat, or customary law, and Islamic law shape Tausug life, in the family and in the community. Vibal Publishing House published it in 2006 and launched it in January 2007 at UP Diliman. Vibal presented it as a detailed guide to Islamic laws and tenets that could also help teach non-Muslims about Islam, at a time when DepEd was bringing Islamic values and madrasah education into the school curriculum. The book runs to 228 pages, with a bibliography and an index.
Jundam is a Tausug from Sulu. He studied at Notre Dame of Jolo College and earned his master's in Asian Studies and his doctorate at the University of the Philippines. He advised the Southern Philippines Council for Peace and Development on education in the ARMM and was dean of the UP Institute of Islamic Studies when the book appeared. It was his first book.
