A reader of essays on the history, faiths and cultures of the Muslim peoples of the Philippines, edited by the Maranao anthropologist.
The Muslim Filipinos: A Book of Readings was edited by Nagasura T. Madale and published by Alemar-Phoenix in Quezon City in 1981. It runs to 376 pages, with a bibliography of nearly 20 pages and an index. Library records list the civilisation of the Muslim peoples of the Philippines as its subject.
The book gathers essays by several writers. Among them is Eric Casiño's 1973 study "Politics, Religion, and Social Stratification: The Case of Cagayan Sulu". Later scholars still cite the reader. Patricia Horvatich, for example, draws on it for how older Philippine schoolbooks treated Muslim children, including lessons on raising pigs.
Madale wrote widely on Maranao folklore and literature. In the 1960s, as a public school teacher, he taught Maranao to the scholar Juan R. Francisco and became his research assistant. By the 1980s he was writing on the Moro separatist movement from Mindanao State University.
