Stories of the lake and essays on Maranao life by a Maranao anthropologist.
This collection by Nagasura T. Madale brings together essays on Maranao oral literature, Islamic literature and Philippine folklore. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts published it in Manila in 2001 as a first edition of 120 pages, with illustrations and references.
The library contents list opens with "The Great Tataro", then "Maranao Forms of Oral Literature", "Legends of the Maranao" and "A Preliminary Classification of Muslim Literature". Further pieces look at "The Role of Islamic Literature in the Development of the Wisdom of the Ummah", religion and culture from the Muslim-Filipino point of view, and the sarimanok as a symbol of national unity. Others treat the political uses of folklore, with the Malakas and Maganda creation story as the case, and there are pieces titled "Mother Earth" and "Sitti Maryam and Nabi Isa".
In the 1960s Madale, then a public school teacher, taught Maranao to the scholar Juan R. Francisco. He then worked as Francisco's research assistant on a study of Sanskrit elements in Maranao language and literature, the fieldwork that turned up the Maranao Ramayana tale Maharadia Lawana.
