Conversational Maranao in dialogues and drills.
Maranao Dialogs and Drills is a course book for intermediate learners of Maranao, or for people who already know another Philippine language such as Tagalog or Maguindanaon. It was written by Almahdi G. Alonto, Abdullah B. Adam and the linguist R. David Zorc, edited by Jason Lobel, and published in 2009 by Dunwoody Press of Hyattsville, Maryland.
It has 64 dialogues with English translations. They run from greetings, shopping at the market and travelling around Marawi to the coronation of a sultan, the kandori feast, weddings, Eid, Ramadan, the singkil dance, wearing a malong, brasswork, a death in the family, banking and working abroad. 22 drills follow on grammar: focus, aspect, negatives, particles, causative verbs and idioms.
An introduction describes the language and its spelling. It notes that Maranao has about 1 million speakers, mostly in Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte, varies little from place to place, and is the only Philippine language with an interpretation of the Qur'an. It also gives advice on custom and manners for visitors.
