A grammar sketch of Maguindanaon for learners.
Maguindanao Grammar Supplement is a course grammar of Maguindanaon in 43 short lessons, for English speakers learning the language. Ruth Stickney adapted it from a Tagalog grammar supplement of 1987 by OMF International and the linguist R. David Zorc revised it for this second edition, adding notes and a list of references. Dunwoody Press of Hyattsville, Maryland, published it in 2009 as the first of its training books on Maguindanao.
The lessons move from the basic clause and question words to linkers, possessives and non-verbal clauses. Most of the book then works through the verb, its focus forms, causatives and abilitatives. Later lessons cover plurals, comparison, time expressions, emotions, commands, negatives and word-building affixes. Appendices follow.
In her preface Stickney says the book is not a full linguistic analysis but a tool for those studying the language. It draws on earlier work by Ron Moe and Eric Fleischman, and its reference list of older Maguindanaon studies goes back to Thomas Forrest's word list of 1779.
