The Story of the GRP-MNLF Peace Talks
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
An account of the peace talks between the Philippine government and the MNLF, based on the author's master's thesis at the National Defense College of the Philippines. It follows the negotiations that led to the 1996 Final Peace Agreement and public opinion around them.
This is an MNLF insider's account of the peace talks with the Philippine government from September 1992 to September 1996, held with the help of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. Abraham Iribani was the MNLF's special peace emissary and chaired its secretariat for the talks. He kept detailed notes of the meetings, and the book grew out of his master's thesis at the National Defense College of the Philippines. He died in 2006, the year it was published.
The book opens with the history of the Moro wars. It then follows the exploratory talks of 1992 and 1993, the first round of formal talks in Jakarta session by session, and the mixed committee meetings, consultations and setbacks that led to the 1996 Final Peace Agreement. It also covers events that troubled the process, such as the kidnapping of 2 Spanish nuns in Sulu, fighting in Basilan and the raid on Ipil.
Soliman M. Santos Jr. wrote the foreword. The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy published it.
