Moros of Zamboanga Peninsula
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
The Kalibugan, the Muslim Subanen of the Zamboanga peninsula, and how they stand between the Moro and Lumad worlds.
This study is about the Kalibugan, a Moro people of the Zamboanga peninsula. Its full subtitle calls it an inquiry into social fission, hybridity and ethnicity. It looks at the basic forms of Kalibugan religious life and how they shape farming beliefs.
Rolando C. Esteban wrote it to bring the Kalibugan to national notice. The book also argues for oral history as a research method, showing that oral evidence can stand in history and ethnography. The University of Santo Tomas Publishing House published it in 2002, at 231 pages.
Esteban teaches social anthropology at the University of the Philippines Diliman and edits the Philippine Social Sciences Review. His interests include pioneer settlements in Mindanao, sea migration and everyday ethnicity. In the same year as the book he studied tradition and modernity in a Subanen village, and he later studied social fission, diaspora and ethnicity among a Southeast Asian Muslim minority with a grant from the Toyota Foundation, presenting the findings in Sabah and Sarawak in 2005.
