Essays on the history of the Moro South, the title essay on the 1902 battle in which American troops stormed the Maranao forts at Bayang, Lanao.
This short book collects 6 essays on the history of the Moro South by the sociologist Federico V. Magdalena. The Mamitua Saber Research Center of Mindanao State University published it in Marawi in 2002, to mark the centenary of the Battle of Bayang. In that battle, in Lanao in 1902, American troops fought the Maranao. Magdalena had read a paper, "Revisiting the 1902 Battle of Bayang", at the centenary in Marawi City that May.
The title essay on the battle comes first. It is followed by an essay on the American operations around Lake Lanao in 1902 and 1903, one on the Moro cotta, or fort, and a profile of the American officer Robert E. Lee Bullard (1861 to 1947). The last 2 essays move to later times: "Moros, Filipinos, and Americanos" and "Moro autonomy and the 1989 plebiscite".
Magdalena wrote widely on the Moros in the same years, on topics such as Moro resistance in the Philippine Revolution, the Chinese in Moroland, Islamic education, and John J. Pershing and the Lake Lanao datus.
