Reflections by the Oblate parish priest of Pikit, Cotabato, a town repeatedly caught in fighting between the army and the MILF. Drawing on what war did to Muslim and Christian villagers there, it argues that war itself is the enemy.
Father Roberto Layson, a Filipino Oblate priest, was parish priest of Pikit in Cotabato, a town caught again and again in fighting between the army and the MILF. In his first 6 years there, he wrote later, 4 wars brought havoc and great suffering to thousands of civilians, Muslim and Christian. This short book of 68 pages, published in 2003 by the Initiatives for International Dialogue, records the images of those wars and draws the lesson in its title: the real enemy in war is war itself.
Layson received the Pax Christi International Peace Award in 2002 for building a culture of peace among Christians, Muslims and indigenous people in a conflict area. His 2011 book Fields of Hope was a follow-up. He said the first book showed the images of war, while the second aimed to bring hope.
