Americans, Moros, and the Colonial World
Still in print: the link goes to a shop that sells it.
The American project in the Moro South set against the other colonial empires of its day, and the Moros’ own uses of it, from the archives of three continents.
Oliver Charbonneau, a historian of the United States at the University of Glasgow, studies American colonial rule over Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago in the early 20th century. He argues that American power in the Moro South rested on a vision of transforming the people it ruled, with violence at its centre. He links the project to American settler conquest in North America and to the European and Islamic empires of the time.
After an introduction, 7 chapters cover how Americans imagined the Moro and the land, colonial courtrooms, clinics and settlements, schools, "corrective violence" including massacre and punishment, how colonists kept up their own spaces and bodies in the tropics, Moros who visited the United States in fact and fiction, and Mindanao-Sulu's ties to the wider world. A conclusion looks at what colonial rule left behind.
The book appeared in Cornell's series The United States in the World in 2020. Ateneo de Manila University Press published a Philippine edition.
