A study of trafficking across the Zamboanga–Sulu corridor to Sabah and beyond, its routes and its victims, by the Ateneo Human Rights Center.
The Ateneo Human Rights Center carried out this study with support from the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. Its foreword notes that the port of Zamboanga City had become a major hub for people trafficked to Malaysia and beyond, yet had been little studied. The writers were Amparita Sta. Maria, Nina Patricia Sison-Arroyo and Rhealeth Krizelle Ramos.
The team interviewed 31 people: 22 actual or potential victims and 9 officials and service providers. It also held round table discussions in Zamboanga City and Bongao, wrote case studies and analysed documents. The results describe the victims, the push and pull factors, the traffickers and the trafficking experience. A further chapter looks at how government agencies enforce and prosecute under the anti-trafficking law, and at weak points in Philippine agencies, the private sector and the Malaysian government.
Its recommendations include strengthening the Anti-Trafficking Law (Republic Act 9208), help for people deported from Malaysia, witness protection, better law enforcement and prosecution, and more public awareness.
