Stories of Mindanao’s wars and the people who live through them, by the Zamboanga novelist.
This collection of short stories by Antonio R. Enriquez was published by Giraffe Books in Quezon City in 1996, in 244 pages. An annotated bibliography of Mindanao resources describes the stories as set in the Zamboanga peninsula and Maguindanao, mostly in the Spanish colonial days of the 17th century. They deal with clashes of religion, tradition and custom, and with wars fought with spears, arrows and long knives between Moro and Christian warriors.
Enriquez was born in Zamboanga and grew up in the old city. He left university in Manila without a degree and did odd jobs, among them work with a surveying company in Cotabato that gave him the setting of his first novel, Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh. During martial law in the 1970s he headed an information office and did research on the Yakan of Basilan, and saw the suffering of its tribal peoples in the war between Christian forces and Moro rebels. He won 2 Palanca grand prizes for the novel and the SEA Write Award in 2002, and died in 2014.
