Stories from the Front Lines
Still in print: the link goes to a shop that sells it.
The five-month battle for Marawi in 2017, from the soldiers, hostages, residents, officials and former fighters who lived it, by a defence journalist who covered it day by day.
This book reports the 5-month battle for Marawi in 2017. Carmela Fonbuena, a journalist who covered defence and was at the front lines, describes the fighting in a crowded city where snipers and landmines were everywhere.
She tells the story through many eyes: soldiers, hostages, displaced civilians, local officials, the MILF and former Maute Group fighters. The first chapter, "The Raid", was published by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.
The book was one of 5 nominees for the 2021 Witold Pilecki International Book Award.
